This scenic area just outside Bend’s front door known as Shevlin Park was founded as a beacon of conservation. Early 1900’s Bend was almost exclusively a logging community and as many areas became heavily logged, demand grew for a nearby area to be protected for recreation. In 1920, Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company, under the guidance of Thomas W. Shevlin and Hugh O’Kane, donated the land to the city of Bend with the stipulation that it be used for park purposes. This initial donation helped establish the park, and it has been expanded over the years through additional land acquisitions.

ABOUT

Adventure: Wanderlust Tours is excited to bring more access to the outdoors by partnering with AdvenChair to help those with mobility challenges get into the outdoors and explore beautiful areas that initially may not seem accessible. Join us for a night of exploration in the Oregon Outback. Our stargazing adventure will take us to Fort Rock, an ancient volcanic tuff ring that rises out of the flatness of the high desert. We will begin our evening at Fort Rock just as the sun is setting to the west, taking in the last of the day’s light as we hike through this incredible National Landmark. After the sun’s light has faded we will settle down for a breathtaking night of celestial wonder!

Naturalist Guided Experience: The tuff ring of Ft. Rock’s pinnacles rise above an ancient ocean bed and much like the geologic history of other Central Oregon formations such as Smith Rock, the area’s geology can be traced back to volcanic activity. It is an area that is locally referred to as the Sagebrush Ocean, a stunning piece of America’s landscape filled with raptors, coyotes and cowboys. The area is also home to some of the oldest evidence of human civilization in North America. Fort Rock is an absolutely incredible stargazing destination, lying just north of the newly designated Oregon Outback Dark Sky Sanctuary.

The Oregon Outback as a whole, is the largest contiguous dark sky shed in the United States, boasting some of the best stargazing in the entire world. That, coupled with a late moonrise will make this night truly spectacular!

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ADVENCHAIR

The AdvenChair is an all-terrain, human-powered hiking wheelchair that allows people with mobility challenges to experience the serenity and grandeur of wild places with family and friends.

With its adjustable handlebars and hand brakes, adjustable seat and harness, a team of one to six people can navigate the AdvenChair off-road wheelchair over rugged, soft or steep terrain with the stability and durability of a mountain bike. At the same time, its removable front wheels and ergonomic design allow the AdvenChair to easily pass through doorways and maneuver indoors, or to be disassembled for transport in the trunk of a car.

Please watch the video below to see how you and your team will operate the AdvenChair to maneuver through uneven terrain and go where no chair has gone before!

With the AdvenChair off-road wheelchair, we can empower every member of our community in their quest for adventure! You can learn more about the AdvenChair’s capabilities below!

If you can dream it, odds are we can bring it to life! Give our office a call at (541) 389-8359 or fill out our contact form and let’s put together an accessibly epic adventure for you and your group!

Custom Tour Options With Advenchair

We also have accessible public tours at stunning locations such as Benham Falls and Smith Rock. Check out our AdvenTours page to learn more about public options!

Tumalo Mountain Hike

Venture into the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range, a volcanic chain that sweeps through the pacific northwest. Our 3 mile hike will take us up 1,600 feet to Tumalo Mountain’s incredible 7,800 foot summit. This shield volcano sits right next to Mt. Bachelor, a great spot for your naturalist guide to highlight the region’s geology from what is perhaps the most impressive view of the Central Oregon Cascades.

Oregon Badlands Wilderness Hike

The recently designated Badlands Wilderness area is ripe with mature, stoic juniper trees and modest rock outcrops that provide vegetative screening and plenty of solitude. The Flatiron Trail that we will be exploring is a two-track trail that skirts along the flank of the Badlands shield volcano, gently descending to a rock outcrop known as Flatiron Rock. Here, one can explore a cracked volcanic ridge that feels almost lunar-like in nature.

Paulina Creek Hike

Paulina Creek flows from the stunning Paulina Lake in the Newberry Caldera and its surrounding wetlands and meadows, providing habitat for a wide range of fish and wildlife! On our adventure, we will head upstream, watching the creek cascade over one volcanic outcropping after another, learning about the incredible National Volcanic Monument that serves as the starting point for this spectacular body of water.

Canoe & Kayak Tours

Central Oregon’s local lakes and rivers are truly spectacular, filled with crisp, clear water that serves as habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. Whether you’re craving daytime adventure in the sun or want to immerse yourself in our incredible night skies, we can put together an incredible paddle tour for you and your group!

For those with mobility challenges that do not impact their ability to paddle a canoe, or kayak, we can facilitate paddling adventures on the Cascade Lakes or Deschutes River.

Use of AdvenChair not needed for paddling tours
